With the 4th of July weekend upon us, there is a looming threat of tennis ball bombs being used to harm dogs.
I know that this may sound a bit ridiculous, but the story is completely plausible.
People aren’t intentionally creating the tennis ball bombs with the intent of harming animals. Rather, they are taking fireworks, poppers, and firecrackers and stuffing tennis balls with them and launching them.
Typically, these balls will explode by the time they land. However, sometimes the flame on the wick gets extinguished due to the wind. This creates a dormant tennis ball bomb laying on the ground.
The rather unsuspecting animal could then walk up to the tennis ball, clamp down on it, and set the fireworks off.
How often do unsuspecting dogs chew on random objects that they find out in the wild?
Quite a bit. and it’s often hard to prevent!
So what can you, the dog owner, do to prevent this from happening to your dog?
Well, first things first, you can make sure that you are watching your dog at all times. This should be a given – treat your dog as if they are a child.
However, this isn’t always possible. This is why some dog owners opt to place their dog in a dog playpen when they’re having people over. Joe Hughes from Best Dog Crates and Beds recommends that every owner should have a dog playpen (check out their dog playpen reviews here). Having a dog playpen ensures that your dog is going to be confined to an area of your choosing. This way you can make sure that your dog is not going to be getting into any trouble. Dog playpens not only provide safety for your dog, but also everyone else that’s at your party. Remember, dogs can be a bit rambunctious at times. This is particularly true when there’s a lot of stimulating events going on at once. Dog playpens ensure that your dog has a very safe, happy area where they can be.
Also, it’s a good idea to keep your dog on a short leash when you’re walking around your neighborhood. While we all love to think that we live in a very safe, quiet neighborhood and that our neighbors aren’t malicious, we need to take all of the precautions that we can.
Remember, unless you live in a gated community, anyone can access your neighborhood.
